Parkville, Maryland--Oak Crest announced the 42-member Student Scholars Class of 2018 during its 22nd Annual Award Ceremony on May 2. The recipients, all members of the Dining Services Department, earned four-year collegiate scholarships in the amount of $7,000.
The program achieved a major milestone this spring. In 22 years, $3 million has been awarded to assist 815 students to advance their collegiate careers, according to Stacey Schiano, Philanthropy Manager for the Erickson Living retirement community, during her campaign report. More than $115,000 was raised during the 2018 campaign, funded primarily through resident contributions.
Additionally, a "Working Scholars" award, a one-year scholarship worth $1,750 for college students employed at Oak Crest, was introduced this year. Five employees earned this scholarship in 2018.
Jill Clippinger, Director of Dining Services at Oak Crest, noted the influence of the community's mission on the program.
"These students reflect the philosophy that our mission is achieved one interaction at a time," stated Mrs. Clippinger. "The energy and enthusiasm that they bring to our residents and each other creates a positive experience. We are proud of these recipients for their professionalism and commitment to learning. In turn, we appreciate the generosity of our residents for contributing to the scholarship fund and sharing their life experiences with all of the students."
Ashley Ruth, currently the personal moving consultant at Oak Crest, provided the keynote address. A graduate of Towson University with a degree in Gerontology, her career with Oak Crest began in 1996 in the Dining Services Department as a high school student. Earning a scholarship in 1999, she also worked in the General Services and Resident Life Departments before beginning her successful career in sales.
Ms. Dee Real, the Resident Advisory Council Philanthropy Liaison, spoke on behalf of the 2,100 residents of Oak Crest.
