Parkville, Maryland—The resident members of the Oak Crest tennis team enjoy a real passion for the sport. The proof is in their schedule.
"Currently, we play twice per week, 52 weeks per year, at outdoor courts down the street on Walther Boulevard and an indoor facility, Northeast Regional Recreation Center, near Perring Parkway," noted Jim Griffin, who moved to the Erickson Living retirement community last November with his wife, Janice, from Phoenix, Maryland.
The group consists of Andy Lioi, who serves as captain, Dick Hall, Jim Houck, George Mickolite, Bob Thuman and the aforementioned Jim Griffin.
Earlier in the month, Team Oak Crest competed in the Erickson Living Tennis Tournament hosted by sister community Riderwood in Silver Spring. Residents from Charlestown in Catonsville and Greenspring in Springfield, Virginia also participated, but a portion of the day belonged to the team from Parkville.
In the finals of the men's doubles division, Andy and Jim defeated the Charlestown squad to earn the title. In a scheduling quirk, the winning team had played their teammates from Oak Crest, Bob and Dick, in a competitive semi-final match.
"The tourney was exciting," said Jim. "Riderwood was a terrific host, and much appreciation is extended to the Charlestown staff for handling logistics such as lunch and the awarding of trophies and medals of participation. Special thanks to Andy for being a terrific captain and to Renee Hill, Wellness Coordinator at Oak Crest, who served as a liaison to the other communities involved and our main cheerleader."
With this year's tournament in the books, the Oak Crest players now look forward to their court time.
"I've been playing since the age of ten," stated Jim. "Tennis has allowed me to compete, meet interesting people and stay in shape. And of course, we've developed great friendships at Oak Crest."
The group is always looking to expand its reach to all residents of Oak Crest; the Erickson Living tourney also includes men's, women's and mixed double's divisions. Any resident of Oak Crest interested should contact Julie Sega, Wellness Manager, at the Fitness Center for more information.
