Oak Crest Commemorates Black History Month With Story-Telling Event

February 22, 2017

Parkville, Maryland--To commemorate Black History Month, Oak Crest residents and employees attended a special event showcasing the courage of African-Americans in the Underground Railroad movement.  Through song, dance and music, Janice Curtis Greene, accompanied by performers David Fakunle, Deborah Pierce-Fakunle and Cheryl Hinton, told the story of Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and brave leader of the Underground Railroad who helped hundreds of men and women escape the bonds of slavery in the 19th century.

What an honor for Oak Crest to host Mrs. Greene, an accomplished storyteller and American Griot!  She has been telling African, African American and Multicultural stories for over 25 years.  She is the past President and Life Member of the Griots' Circle of Maryland, Inc. and a Life Member of the National Association of Black Storytellers (NABS) where she is also on the Board of Directors.  Ms. Greene is also a member of the National Storyteller's Network and the Network of Biblical Storytellers International.

The event, held on February 22, was proudly sponsored by the Diversity and Inclusion Council of Oak Crest.
