Intergenerational breakfast features Dr. Larry Gibson as keynote speaker
PARKVILLE, MD---Residents and staff of Oak Crest, the Erickson Living retirement community, commemorated African American History Month at a special intergenerational breakfast celebration.
The theme of the event was "The Road We Have Traveled...Our Journey Ahead: Celebrating the Civil Rights Movement, Then and Now."
Oak Crest was proud to host Dr. Larry S. Gibson as the keynote speaker.
For four decades, Mr. Gibson has been the Professor of Law at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. During that time, he served in the U.S. Justice Department as Associate Deputy Attorney General and as the Director of the National Economic Crimes Project. Most recently, he was the principal advocate for a law passed by the Maryland General Assembly that renamed the BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.
Dr. Gibson provided an insightful history into the legacy of Baltimore native and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who won his first civil rights case in 1936 with the Murray v. Pearson decision.
Marjorie Green, an Oak Crest resident and Executive Committee Member of the NAACP Baltimore City Branch, introduced Dr. Gibson.
During the program, the "Voices of Northwood," the School Choir of Northwood Elementary, performed three musical pieces.
Tameka Harris, hostess of Good Morning, Oak Crest, shared her gift of music with a moving rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by James Weldon Johnson. Lloyd Bowser, doctor of podiatric medicine at the Oak Crest Medical Center, begin the celebration with a special presentation of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
"It was an honor to celebrate the historic accomplishments of Thurgood Marshall with Dr. Gibson and distinguished guests," stated Mark Roussey, Associate Executive Director of Oak Crest. "Our employees and residents made the ceremony special by sharing their passion for diversity. And nearly a week later, we are still talking about the beautifully uplifting musical ministry offered by the talented students of the Voices of Northwood."
