Evelyn Norton Inspires Pure Joy in the Skies Over Oak Crest

May 24, 2016

Parkville, Maryland—Evelyn Norton is always looking for ways to have fun.

So when the program coordinator asked residents of the assisted living neighborhood at Oak Crest for ideas about future activities, Ms. Norton shared hers.

Fifteen years ago, she recalled taking part in a kite-flying program held at the Jacksonville Senior Center in Baltimore County.

"I enjoyed it then and thought we could do it here, too," said Ms. Norton, 92.

Thanks to Ms. Norton's inspiration, Oak Crest retirement community held its first ever kite flying event on May 16.  Residents were joined by 15 local homeschooled children and their parents for an afternoon of good ol' fashioned fun.

Lisa Hackett serves as the Continuing Care Program Coordinator for Assisted Living activities at Oak Crest.

"When Evelyn came to me with the idea, I first thought 'wow it's going to take a perfect day to pull this off.'  And those have been few and far between this spring," stated Ms. Hackett.

The previous day was riddled with the after effects of strong thunderstorms and gale-force winds.  But, on Monday, Mother Nature cooperated with the most brilliant blue sky of the season…and a steady 15-mph wind.

It made for an ideal day of kite-flying, even if a few of them got stuck in nearby trees.

Ms. Norton got into the act, as her orange & blue butterfly-themed kite soared into the sky.

"Getting the kite to fly so high and seeing the children laugh and play were my favorite parts of the day," described Ms. Norton.

Ms. Norton grew up in Hydes with her four siblings.  She raised one son and worked for the Baltimore County Board of Education, retiring as an administrative assistant to the superintendent.

Her calendar is always filled at Oak Crest where she enjoys trivia, sewing, painting and ceramics.

"Evelyn is the most organized person I know so it's not surprising that she was the motivation for an event that brought people of all ages pure joy," said Ms. Hackett.

It also demonstrated the emphasis placed on listening to the needs of residents in every continuum of care.

"In 2016, just about anything is possible," noted Ms. Hackett.  "We plan for people's dreams."
