Ann’s Choice Residents Donate Garden Vegetables to the Warminster Food Bank

Warminster, PA – Two green thumbed residents at Ann's Choice retirement community have utilized their talents to give back to the community. Ruth Kurtz and Betty Sykes cultivate gardens at Ann's Choice specifically to donate the yield to the local Warminster Food Bank.

The idea first started by Mrs. Kurtz and Mrs. Sykes using extra garden spaces at Ann's Choice to grow vegetables exclusively for charity. Four years later, the pair has donated over two-tons worth of vegetables to the Warminster Food Bank.

"We both love gardening and we are honored to use our passion in a way that helps others who are truly in need," said Mrs. Kurtz. "Last year we donated over 700 pounds of vegetables to the Warminster Food Bank and our goal this year is to reach well over 800 pounds."

Mrs. Kurtz and Mrs. Sykes have five garden plots at Ann's Choice for vegetables. They plant tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis, beans, lettuce and carrots. So far this year they have donated over 550 pounds of vegetables to the food bank.

Cultivating and transporting the yield is hard work. Fortunately, the two receive help from other residents and clubs as well. Residents, Bill Danusiar and Robby and Mary Robinson have been instrumental with garden maintenance and food delivery.

The Ann's Choice Garden Club has also helped the pair by donating plant seeds and fencing to keep animals from eating their crops. Some members of the Garden Club also give their own crops to be donated to the food bank.

Mrs. Kurtz and Mrs. Sykes have been so successful with their donations that the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania has recognized the two for their charitable gardens.
