OVERLAND PARK, KS (November 27, 2015) – Tallgrass Creek residents and staff celebrated their fitness on Thanksgiving by participating in the retirement community's first Turkey Triathlon. Seven teams – comprising 18 residents and 3 staff members -- swam, biked and walked in and around the Fitness and Aquatics Center.
They swam for 10 minutes in the pool and then biked for 30 minutes and walked for 20 minutes. The goal was to cover as much distance in the time provided as possible. Stationary bicycles and treadmills were used, with resident cheerleaders and a guest costumed Turkey cheering on participants.
Winners (with their mileage noted) were:
Gold Medalists: Camin Bell, Sharon McCoy and Glenn McCoy traveled 8.66 total combined miles.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
Silver Medalists: Jennifer Grey, Joan Grant and Ester Dritley traveled 7.97 total combined miles.
Bronze Medalists: Lynn Brown, Jack Dritley and Rich Brown traveled 6.45 total combined miles.
The triathlon invited people of all ages to exercise during the holiday season. "Intergenerational fitness is important because it promotes camaraderie," said Fitness Coordinator Cydney Cunningham. "It also pushes people to train differently and harder than they normally do."
Tallgrass Creek offers 13 water classes and 14 land classes of health and wellness activities. Each class is designed to meet the residents where they are and to encourage them to add movement to their daily lifestyle.
