Maris Grove Residents Go Back to School

April 30, 2013

GLEN MILLS, PA - Maris Grove residents and Garnet Valley High School students participated in a Living History event, which was essentially a discussion about The Great Depression and WW II.
This interactive project exposed Garnet Valley 11th grade American History students to firsthand accounts of significant events in American History and a personal description of what it was like to living during these times in history.
Students prepared and asked questions of the resident panel and the discussions ranged from mass unemployment, bank closings, multiple families living in one home to being drafted into WWII, news sources and VE/VJ day events. One resident brought his service medals including the Purple Heart along with actual ration books and his draft card.
"This was a wonderful opportunity for our residents to share their wealth of knowledge with a younger generation who can understand what it was like to live during those crucial times in our country's history," said Maureen Heckler, Maris Grove executive director.
Maris Grove Director of Resident Life Marie DiCostanza said, "This project is essentially a 'living history' where the kids can see and hear their text books come alive."
Everyone enjoyed the day and look forward to the next visit (tentatively late May/early June) to discuss The Cold War, Vietnam, and the Civil Rights era.
