Maris Grove Raises Over $112,000 for Graduating Student Employees

June 18, 2012

Scholars' Fund Campaign Yields Significant Contributions from Maris Grove Residents for Students' Continuing Education

GLEN MILLS, PA - With the school year now just about finished, Maris Grove held an award ceremony to honor 34 area "student scholars" who work at the active adult community.  They will benefit from Maris Grove's Scholars' Fund, which provides up to $4,000 per student for their upcoming college or secondary school education.
Residents donated 95% of the $112,231 raised in cash and pledged gifts toward the fund during a campaign that spanned from April 23rd - May 29th.  The remaining money raised came from staff members from vendors, resident families and friends.
Resident donations were up this year: from 61% in 2011 to 70% in 2012.  This clearly illustrates that more and more residents are committed toward helping create a better future one scholar at a time.
Each student scholar receives a scholarship for up to eight semesters, which is broken down into $500 per semester paid directly to their educational institution.
The Scholars' Fund recipients must meet certain requirements in order to be eligible to receive funding, including working at least 1,000 hours at Maris Grove over a consecutive two-year period, amassing a proven exemplary work record and planning to attend college or trade school on a full-time basis.
Maris Grove Executive Director Maureen Heckler said, "The Scholars' Fund is Maris Grove's way of providing educational assistance for the bright, dedicated and hard-working students who are such an important part of our community.  I want to personally thank all of our residents who are helping to give these young men and women assistance that will potentially help them flourish.  Through these generous donations, the community is helping shape the future of these students."
"The charitable residents who contribute to the fund year after year are not only doing a good deed, but they are investing in the future," said Barbara Burri, Maris Grove director of philanthropy.  "With the cost of a college education skyrocketing, scholarships are sometimes critical to meeting financial obligations.  We appreciate the generosity of the residents who donate to this worthwhile cause, which enables the students to succeed and achieve at school."
A total of nearly $450,000 was raised since the Scholars' Fund campaign's inception in 2007 for these bright, hard-working contributors to the community.  Originally only a handful of students qualified for the program.  Each year more and more student employees become Student Scholars, and in the fall semester of 2012, the number of students who will be receiving a check totals 95.
In addition to the Scholars' Fund, Maris Grove has two privately funded scholarships - The John G. and Marjorie B. Long Scholarship, and the newly established Amy's Angel Rays Scholarship.
The John G. and Marjorie B. Long Scholarship, which is a $4,000 award given to a student who meets criteria consisting of grade point average, financial need and strength of the application essay.  This year's winner is Emma Ostrowski from West Chester, PA and she plans to attend Drexel University.
And, Lindsay Lassik from Garnet Valley, PA is the recipient of the $5,000 Amy's Angel Rays Scholarship for 2012.  This scholarship is awarded to a student who will be studying nursing, or develop a concentration on study in the medical field.  Lindsay plans to attend Drexel University to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner.
