Spoiler Alert on 7/20: Dallas Resident to Tell a Good Story In Time-Honored Style

July 18, 2016

Dallas, Texas—Before there were Kindles and iPads, before people issued "spoiler alerts" about the plots of their favorite books on Facebook and Twitter, there was Dallas resident Joy Davis.

Since 1965, Mrs. Davis has reviewed books with a flair for the dramatic.  She's been a regular on the active Dallas Book Club circuit, scheduling 90-100 engagements annually.

But her reviews come with a twist: Mrs. Davis dresses in the costume of a character in the book that she is reviewing.  From her first review of the book, "The Beloved Invader," to "Celia Garth," Mrs. Davis has entertained audiences in attire from American Revolution attire to the Civil War and beyond.

Now at age 85 and a resident of Highland Springs retirement community in North Dallas, Mrs. Davis is celebrating her golden anniversary year and making her final major appearance as a book reviewer in the metroplex.

On Wednesday, July 20, she will make another character come to life by reviewing Erich Segal's "Only Love," the story of an idealistic young doctor who risks his life fighting a deadly disease in Africa.  An audience of 500 people is expected at the Highland Park United Methodist Church as part of its 2016 Rejebian Summer Series.

A graduate of Mississippi College, Mrs. Davis has also published twelve gift books, and her poetry was featured on radio commentator Paul Harvey's national broadcasts.
