Mutual Generosity Marks 2013 Student Scholars' Awards at Highland Springs

DALLAS, TX---As residents and staff of Highland Springs retirement community awarded six students employed in its Dining Services Department with collegiate scholarships, a theme emerged at the celebratory luncheon: generosity.
"The students are generous with their time and positive attitudes, and our residents are committed to honoring academic excellence in a tangible way," stated Matt Neville, Executive Director of Highland Springs.
Currently attending high school in the Dallas area, these employees of the Erickson Living retirement community earned scholarships for their collegiate careers.  The value of these awards is $500 per semester for a four-year total of $4,000 paid directly to their accredited higher education program.
Recognized during an awards luncheon on Saturday, June 15th, the recipients for 2013 are Mekia Curry, Adrienne Landry, Morgan Landry, David Nguyen, Colton Payne and Diana Rodriguez.
A fundraising drive in May generated nearly $38,000 for the program from individual contributions mainly from residents, and a golf tournament was held on May 1st at Sherill Park Golf Course.
Helen Adele Johnson is a resident of Highland Springs who serves as Chair of the Scholarship Committee.  The retired fourth grade school teacher from the Richardson Independent School District notes the strong bonds created between residents and students as a motivating factor in supporting the scholarship fund. 
"As a group, we value the power of education," stated Ms. Johnson.  "We're like surrogate grandparents for the students so we really learn from each other.  This is a wonderful setting for young adults to hone their workplace skills.  In turn, this is a way for us to assist their futures by helping these students earn college degrees."
Along with Ms. Johnson, six residents (Charles Alspach, Sue Garcia, Dick Manassa, Pat Mullins, Ted Seloff and Sue Worth) and three employees (Joyce Cates, Karla Kimber and Lil Smith) serve on the Committee.
Highland Springs employs over eighty local students for its distinct dining areas.  To qualify for a scholarship, a student must work 1000 hours over a two-year period, maintain a 2.5 grade point average, embody the mission-oriented values of the community and complete an application process that includes an essay, recommendation and an interview with the Scholarship Committee.
