Tooth Fairy Project fills dental care needs for disadvantaged children
DALLAS, TX---It can be easy to take good health and dental hygiene for granted, especially at a younger age. For those less fortunate, though, the basics of health care can be tough to come by.
Richardson-based NETWORK of Community Ministries, a basic needs non-profit organization, offers assistance to children, low-income families and senior citizens.
Through its Adolescent and Children's Clinic program, the NETWORK created the Tooth Fairy project in 2011. On December 1st, sixteen residents of Highland Springs, an Erickson Living retirement community in North Dallas, volunteered at the headquarters.
They spent their time assembling nine hundred dental packets consisting of a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss, along with care pamphlets in both English and Spanish.
The packets are then distributed to economically-disadvantaged children via local health fairs in the NETWORK's service area that encompasses fourteen zip codes in Dallas County.
Elizabeth Wheeler, volunteer coordinator for the NETWORK, visited Highland Springs in October to meet with residents and community resources manager, Barbara Blachly, about partnership possibilities.
"The value of volunteers like those from Highland Springs is immeasurable," described Ms. Wheeler. "The NETWORK relies on individuals and groups to support our daily operations and special projects. In 2010 alone, we served 48,000 individuals within the fourteen zip codes banded by the Richardson Independent School District."
Ms. Wheeler notes that "the residents of Highland Springs did a great job with the Tooth Fairy project. Their enthusiasm to help was much appreciated, and we look forward to future opportunities to work together."
