Dallas, Texas—For William Connell, checking Facebook has become part of his daily routine.
The U.S. Navy veteran and retired senior program manager in communications initially joined Facebook to keep up with former co-workers.
"Everyone was using it, but admittedly, my interest level waned a bit," said Mr. Connell, a resident of Highland Springs retirement community with his wife Carol since 2012. "But then I became the administrator of a faith-based blog, and Facebook became part of our marketing plan. We've received more than one million visitors in five years so my eyes were opened to the reach of social media platforms."
Using his reliable desktop computer and even a newer iPad, Mr. Connell is also active on Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and Google Plus.
Mr. Connell is one of a growing number of residents of the Erickson Living retirement community who turn to social media for receiving news and connecting with family and friends. It is a big reason why Highland Springs launched a new Facebook page in January, https://www.facebook.com/HighlandSprings.
"Our residents and customers are more tech-savvy than ever," stated Matt Neville, Executive Director. "The Facebook page will be an outlet to share news about Highland Springs, provide information about events open to the public, and tell the interesting stories about the people who live and work at our community."
Highland Springs already caters to the tech-set. The 89-acre campus features a computer center, and common areas in the clubhouses are connected to Wi Fi. Residents have created their own platforms to highlight campus life, artistic endeavors and ways in which they provide friendship to fellow residents.
On the events calendar, it is common to see sessions held with tech professionals and student volunteers from nearby University of Texas at Dallas offering additional assistance with personal computer set-up, smart phone app installation and getting started on social media.
"We certainly live in a digital age in which information is readily available at our fingertips," said Mr. Neville. "Many of our future residents and their families research senior living options on the internet. Our Facebook page will be another resource for them."
