Over 200 Join Greenspring Program to Salute Veterans

November 11, 2015

(Springfield, Virginia) - On Wednesday, November 11, over 200 residents and family members attended a Veterans' Day program at Greenspring retirement community. "Today is a day to remember and honor all of our veterans," said resident Bob Zikowitz, U.S. Army (Ret.), who served as Master of Ceremonies.

This year, the guest speaker for Greenspring's Veterans' Day program was Amy Wittman, Editor in Chief of SEAPOWER magazine and Staff Vice President of Communications at the Navy League of the United States.   The Navy League was founded in 1902 and is comprised of 40,000 civilians providing a powerful voice for a stronger sea service to Congress and the American people.

Ms. Wittman spoke about the sacrifices veterans and their families make to protect our country. "We should be a grateful nation for their service and sacrifice," said Wittman. "It is right we honor our veterans; not with sales at the mall or an extra day off of work, but with parades, with prayer, with song, and just maybe, give a little something back to them to let them know we care."

The Veterans' Day program also included a "Salute to the Armed Forces," as well as performances of patriotic songs by Greenspring's Choristers, resident and U.S. Army Colonel (Ret.) Gray Parks, and the Franke family, including Greenspring's Lead Social Worker, Sue Franke, a retired U.S. Marine. Greenspring is home to several resident groups celebrating and honoring military service including Daughters of the American Revolution, Women in Military Service, The American Legion of Greenspring, The Aero Club, and the Naval History and Heritage Group.
