Greenspring Volunteers to Improve Local Community

Residents and staff participate in MLK Day of Service

Springfield, Va. – February 3, 2020 – On Friday, January 24, 2020, 21 residents and staff from Greenspring, a senior living community developed and managed by Erickson Living, participated in a Day of Service to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

This year marked the 25^th anniversary of the holiday, which is observed each year on the third Monday in January as "a day on, not a day off" to honor the Civil Rights leader's life and legacy. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

Greenspring's Diversity & Inclusion Committee took the opportunity to organize a volunteer program for both residents and staff at the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C. A Greenspring shuttle provided transportation to and from the Food Bank's facility, where volunteers participated in sorting canned foods for local low-income communities.

The Capital Area Food Bank leads the Washington, D.C. region's efforts to provide good, healthy food to people struggling with hunger and food insecurity. Each year, the Food Bank sources and distributes food for more than 30 million meals.

Greenspring's Diversity & Inclusion committee seeks to provide programs and resources that enhance knowledge, encourage understanding and foster a culture of mutual respect among community members. The group is one of many active clubs and committees on campus, providing residents with plenty of opportunities to engage and connect with neighbors who share their interests.

"The Martin Luther King Day Holiday serves to remind us of the social issues that Dr. King fought for and helps us work towards strengthening communities," said Nahid Nasseh, a Greenspring employee who helped to organize the event. "It is a special day for reflection and appreciation for Dr. King's life of service and goals of bringing people together."
