Greenspring Resident Receives Lifetime Award from the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra

July 28, 2011

Mickey Zimmerman is honored for his commitment to the orchestra for over three decades

SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA - Emile "Mickey" Zimmerman, currently a resident at Greenspring retirement community, remembers playing in the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra's (FSO) first venue at Annandale High School.  Zimmerman, who helped to form the group in 1957, was the orchestra's first Concertmaster when they acquired a permanent concert venue at George Mason University. Zimmerman retired from the FSO in 1991 and was recently presented with the Dorothy Farnham Feuer Award, named after the founder of the orchestra and one of Zimmerman's longtime friends, for his commitment of thirty-four years to the group.

Zimmerman, who also played the clarinet, studied arts at the Peabody Conservatory and received a performing arts degree from Catholic University.  Throughout his time with the Fairfax Symphony, Zimmerman also played with the group's string quartet and quintet. He vividly recalls performing at various weddings and schools functions, as well as at Gunston Hall and at Wolf Trap alongside Ella Fitzgerald.
For years, Zimmerman performed at Greenspring with another Greenspring resident Dick Pledger, who served as his accompanist. While he does not perform in that capacity anymore, one can still hear Zimmerman playing his violin while passing by his apartment at Greenspring and at the community's chapel on Friday mornings. Zimmerman continues to support the FSO by organizing trips to their six Masterwork concerts with often over fifty other resident FSO season ticket holders at Greenspring.
