Greenspring Donates 320 Thanksgiving Turkeys to Area Families in Need

November 20, 2015

(Springfield, Virginia) – On Friday, November  20th, residents and staff at Greenspring retirement community participated in the 13th annual Turkey Trot on campus.  The event is held each year to help raise funds for several area nonprofits.  As a result of the funds donated by the community this year, Greenspring was able to distribute 320 turkeys to local families in need through three area nonprofits: SOME (So Others Might Eat), Central Union Mission, and Southeast Whitehouse.

"I want to thank you for contributing to a really worthy cause," said Brad Hibbs, Wellness Manager at Greenspring, addressing the Turkey Trot participants.  Each year, Hibbs' wellness team leads the coordination of the Greenspring Turkey Trot.  Traditionally, representatives from each of the nonprofits visit for the Turkey Trot and share their appreciation for the generosity of the Greenspring community.

"We are very grateful to you," said David Treadwell, the Executive Director of Central Union Mission.  "You are our number one supplier of turkeys."  Treadwell also noted that Central Union Mission provides 2 million meals over the course of a year.

From Southeast White House, Tina Henderson joined the event and shared her appreciation and a bit about her organization. "When you give us these turkeys, we are helping kids start family traditions.  Thanks to Greenspring, we know we are going to have turkeys to give out and it means a lot to us," said Henderson.  Greenspring residents Scott and Marilyn Dimock have played a significant role in supporting Southeast White House for many years; Scott is the co-founder for the organization.
