Spirit of Inclusiveness Thrives for Faith Communities of Eagle's Trace

August 21, 2014

HOUSTON, TX---When Sanford and Ruth Herman moved to Eagle's Trace eight years ago, they celebrated weekly Shabbat in their new apartment home with fellow resident Dorothy Davison.
Fast forward to 2014.  The Jewish Faith Community of Eagle's Trace has grown to thirty strong, and their most recent Seder attracted nearly one hundred residents.
The breadth of the Pastoral Ministries Department appeals to Mrs. Herman.
"Inclusiveness is the best way I can describe the culture of faith at Eagle's Trace," described Mrs. Herman, who retains an associate membership at Beth Israel in Houston and also worships at nearby Temple Sinai in West Houston.
Mary Kate Kell serves as the Pastoral Ministries Coordinator at the Erickson Living retirement community.  She will soon celebrate eight years at Eagle's Trace, providing her with a unique perspective of the spiritual needs of residents.
"Many new residents remain at their place of worship for as long as they can, especially if they are Houstonians," described Ms. Kell.  "However, we are able to assist with the transition to a vibrant faith community here."
Via visiting clergy, Eagle's Trace offers Catholic masses and Protestant services on-site.  Additionally, Ms. Kell supports the Jewish Faith Community and coordinates prayer groups and educational events for all.
She also provides spiritual comfort to residents, employees and families, a responsibility that has grown with the opening of the continuing care neighborhood in 2013.
Serving others is a key mission of the Pastoral Ministries Department.  Projects such as the Prayer Shawl Knitters, Eagle's Trace Chorus and the Community of Hope provide ministry to residents.  Ms. Kell and her volunteers partner with the Community Outreach Committee to help others such as veterans and children in need in Houston.
"I am so proud of how residents and employees are eager to do what it takes to make the world a better place," said Ms. Kell.  "Their caring reflects the respect in which our varying faith communities co-exist gracefully and work together selflessly."
