Healthy Starts to 2014 Resolutions at Eagle's Trace

HOUSTON, TX---A recent Harris Interactive poll listed losing weight, exercising and eating more healthily as three of the top five New Year's resolutions that people strive to achieve.
But the reality is that only 40 percent make it to July!
Shirley Woods agrees that these health-related goals can be challenging to keep.  The Wellness Manager at Eagle's Trace, the Erickson Living retirement community in West Houston, says that it's all about balancing expectations and reality.
"People of all ages tend to take too much on at one time.  Instead of resolving to get to the gym seven days per week for an hour, begin by working out three days per week for thirty minutes, for example," stated Ms. Woods.  "Incremental change, whether it's to lose weight or improve diet, is the way to go."
As a certified trainer for more than thirty years, Ms. Woods continues to see the value of total wellness programs that include regular fitness regimens. 
At Eagle's Trace, residents enjoy a fitness center that is conveniently open 24/7, stocked with cardio and strength training equipment and free weights.  Individual sessions are available with personal trainers, and twenty-three group classes are offered, including tai chi, yoga, Pilates and chair aerobics.

"There are many advantages for older adults to begin a fitness routine.  I've seen balance and overall demeanor improve quickly as well as better test results for  'bad' health numbers such as blood pressure and cholesterol," described Ms. Woods.
In getting started, Ms. Woods recommends checking with a physician.  Once cleared, embracing a variety of activities and classes is a must.
"Boredom with the same exercise routine brings many regimens to a grinding halt.  Also, take advantage of socialization.  Participating in group classes or having an exercise buddy adds to the fun and creates accountability by their nature," stated Ms. Woods.
Finally, Ms. Woods recommends seeking professional advice.  "Even it's for a few sessions, the power of a certified trainer is an investment  in health.  They will provide you with wellness knowledge to last a lifetime."
