Eagle’s Trace Resident Merrilyn Meushaw Captures a Christmas on the Buffalo Bayou

December 16, 2014

HOUSTON, TX—When Merrilyn Meushaw retired, she finally had time to answer a question: how far could she develop her artistic talents? So far, the sky is the limit. Ms. Meushaw, now a resident of Eagle's Trace retirement community in West Houston, won the 3rd Annual District 133 Ornament Decorating Contest sponsored by State Representative Jim Murphy. Her winning ornament is now displayed on the Lone Star Christmas Tree in the House of Representatives chamber in Austin.  Ms. Meushaw receives a VIP tour of the Capitol Building and Dome and selects a date for the Texas flag to be flown over the Capitol. Ms. Meushaw's entry reflected the contest theme of "A Christmas on Buffalo Bayou."  The ornament's colors represent her vision: blue as the Buffalo Bayou, black as the flowing patterns of the water and silver as the reflection of the stars on the water. Ms. Meushaw wrote a poem to describe her vision: "Dreaming of a Buffalo Bayou Christmas" Pulse points of shining lightReflecting on a moonlit nightStarry sky on waters brightBuffalo Bayou Christmas night "I enjoy using different materials and designs in creating my art work," stated Ms. Meushaw.  "My ideas are very often inspired by my Christian faith." Born in Midland, Texas, Ms. Meushaw moved to Houston in 1967 with her family.  She taught elementary school in the Spring Branch Independent School District for thirty years and overseas for two years. Art was always a hobby, but that talent has blossomed since moving to Eagle's Trace earlier this year. "It's inspiring to meet other like-minded people living here who enjoy 'creating art,'" noted Ms. Meushaw.  She even converted a spare room in her apartment into a mini art studio. Winning the contest came as a total surprise. "I was shocked because it's the first time I've won anything!  Receiving encouragement from friends living here motivates me to continue creating art," said Ms. Meushaw.   Eagle's Trace resident, Betty Schell, finished second place in the contest.    About Eagle's Trace:  Eagle's Trace is one of eighteen continuing care retirement communities managed by Erickson Living.  Located in Houston, Texas, the scenic 70-acre campus is home to more than 650 residents.  Eagle's Trace is the ideal greater Houston retirement destination offering a true sense of community, convenience beyond compare and a sensible financial structure.  [[{"fid":"162546","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":"","field_slideshow_link[und][0][title]":"","field_slideshow_link[und][0][url]":"","field_wrapper_link[und][0][title]":"","field_wrapper_link[und][0][url]":""},"type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-default"}}]]
