Eagle's Trace Honors 2013 Student Scholars During Ceremony

August 12, 2013

HOUSTON, TX---August 4th was not only a day to celebrate academic success but also to highlight the strength of intergenerational connections.  Residents, employees, family members and guests did both as Eagle's Trace, the Erickson Living retirement community, held its 2013 Student Scholars' Awards Ceremony.
Seven area high school students employed in the Dining Services Department of Eagle's Trace earned four-year collegiate scholarships.  The value of these awards is $1,000 per semester for a total of $8,000 per student.
Deborah Cate, a resident of Eagle's Trace, offered congratulatory remarks during the event.  A retired chemistry teacher and principal, the former Memorial resident noted that the program is notable for "the special relationships formed between residents and students.  We think of them as our surrogate grandkids.  We appreciate their thoughtfulness, and in turn, provide mentorship in any way we can.  It's a true family atmosphere."
"Since many of us are former educators, we recognize the value of learning.  We want to see the students go as far as they can in life," concluded Ms. Cate.
During the ceremony, Ben Cornthwaite, Executive Director of Eagle's Trace, announced that the community has pledged more than $100,000 in scholarships since the inception of the program in 2007.  That total is overwhelmingly comprised of donations made by residents during an annual giving campaign.
Eagle's Trace employs thirty-one local students for its distinct dining areas.  To qualify for a scholarship, a student must work 1,000 hours and maintain good academic and professional standing.
For students, there is much more responsibility than just coming to work.  Prior to serving meals, student employees participate in a daily pre-shift meeting, where managers review the menu and the specific focus of the evening.  They are expected to provide excellent customer service to residents; when their shift is finished, students can also eat for free.
