Book One for the Troops: Eagle's Trace Residents Partner With Operation Paperback

January 18, 2012

HOUSTON, TX---Escaping into a good book is one of life's simple pleasures.  However, for military service men and women stationed overseas, it can be a pure luxury at best.
When the resident-led Library Committee of Eagle's Trace, the Erickson Living retirement community in Houston, learned of an opportunity to support American troops, they quickly took action.
In this case, the group partnered with Operation Paperback, a non-profit organization that collects gently used books and sends them to American troops deployed overseas.
Since 1999, over 1.3 million books have been shipped through the program to thirty-six locations around the globe.
Eagle's Trace resident Donna Craig has spearheaded the effort, and in just two months, the community has already mailed twenty-two boxes filled with paperbacks and other items such as DVD's/CD's, magazines and beef jerky.  Another six boxes are scheduled to be shipped in January.
To organize the effort, a collection box is maintained in the Eagle's Trace library.  Residents drop off the paperbacks, and Ms. Craig, along with her team, collect, categorize and ship the books via priority mail to their overseas destination.
For Ms. Craig, Operation Paperback is a natural fit for Eagle's Trace: "We are blessed that many veterans live at our community, and this is a positive outlet for the pride and patriotism felt for our brave military men and women. This strong bond has led to wonderful generosity."
A personalized note is placed in each box.  "We've already received thank you notes from troops around the world," described Ms. Craig.  "They say that the books are morale boosters for their down time and a form of entertainment, especially for those deployed in outlying areas.  We look forward to being consistent contributors in 2012."
