Palm Beach Gardens, Fl. - In 2017, Mona Osterman decided she was eager to change her lifestyle. She had grown tired of the responsibility of homeownership and was ready for more social yet maintenance-free living. When she discovered Devonshire at PGA National, an Erickson Living retirement community located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and situated on a scenic 28-acre campus on the grounds of prestigious PGA National, she couldn't move fast enough.
"I loved it before I had even moved," she says
Howard, her husband, on the other hand, was hesitant. He anticipated that he would be giving up his independence. But, he says, nothing was getting in Mona's way. "Her enthusiasm induced her to accelerate the move," he says.
Fortunately for the both of them, an apartment home that matched their specifications was available. "I was reluctant, but we found an apartment home that completely fit our needs," Mr. Osterman says.
They moved into their 1,869-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath home with a den in April 2018, just six months after seeing Devonshire for the first time in October. "It's perfectly sized for us," Mr. Osterman says. "We have plenty of space and a very nice layout as well."
Now settled for just over three months, he has modified his uncertainty. "Many aspects exceed my expectations," he says. "I'm pleased with all of the programs they have—from excursions to cultural programs to speakers. It's all at a level above what I had assumed."
For Mrs. Osterman, it's just what she had hoped for. "It's a wonderful lifestyle," she says. "There's something for everyone."
As someone who had never exercised, she's enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise. "Now I'm using the fitness center. It's an inspiration to see older people exercising," she says, adding that the fitness center has a steady stream of people daily. "When I was there at 2 p.m., 30 people had already signed in that day."
Mr. Osterman, who still works as a business consultant, takes advantage of the entertainment programs. So while he's not as involved in the social activities as Mona, his biggest highlight of moving to Devonshire is the convenience.
"We like the availability of valet services to help you get local groceries from the store to your kitchen. I think the security is excellent. Each of the security personnel are trained first responders. That's comforting," he says.
Then there's the home maintenance. Their former house, a 2,600-square-foot three-bedroom home with a den and a family room, "had the full measure of maintenance responsibilities—a roof, driveway, AC, a generator, a pool, and a great deal of maintenance for that."
Now, he says, "We simply call maintenance for whatever the problem may be, and they come right away."
Adding on, he says, "We like the amenity package, that there are five restaurants rather than one dining hall. It was also obvious that the people here have all been successful and have achieved great things in their careers and are consequently very interesting people. We have good conversation and share experiences."
When it comes down to it, Mr. Osterman says, "It's a cut above."
"Many of our community members have made the same decision as Mona and Howard," says Sales Director Kathy McCrossin. "Why wait? Devonshire's unmatched value replaces your cost of living and delivers more amenities and services than your current living situation."
