Five Questions with Heather Sheridan, Associate Executive Director at Charlestown

December 4, 2019

New leader brings wealth of experience to senior living community

Q: What are some of the highlights of your career that led you to this role?

A: Throughout my career, I have chosen positions that have meant something to me personally and are causes that I care about. I have worked in various policy and advocacy roles focused on issues impacting lower income communities. Most recently, I oversaw grant funding and training to homeless service providers and affordable housing policy impacting the homeless for the State of Maryland. Prior to that, I managed housing programs serving the homeless in New York City. Working for causes I believe in and feel strongly about has led me to Charlestown. I believe that no matter your age or ability, everyone has the right to maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life!

Q: Tell us one thing about working at Charlestown that has surprised you.

A: The feedback culture. I have worked for not-for-profit and government organizations, and each has had a unique culture. Some have had mission and values that were not necessarily aligned with behavior. That is not the case at Charlestown. So far, I have learned that my teammates are accepting of giving and receiving feedback and that is a welcomed change!

Q: What do you like most about working at Charlestown (so far)?

A: I have really enjoyed getting to know the residents and their stories. It is inspiring to hear about where people have lived, what they have experienced and what makes them happy now. I have had the same opportunity to learn about my colleagues, and that has been a gift as well. Getting to know those you work with helps you work better together!

Q: What are you most looking forward to for Charlestown in 2020?

A: I am looking forward to establishing and building on a strong connection with my team here on campus and Associate Executive Directors throughout the enterprise.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A: I love to dance. I am a classically trained ballet dancer, so dancing and movement make my soul very happy! I also love spending quality time with family and friends and traveling to experience different cultures.
