CATONSVILLE, MD (June 6, 2015) -- D-Day Veterans who live at Charlestown retirement community today kept their annual tradition of toasting with a bottle of Calvados Boulard liquer from France to commemorate the invasion and give tribute to their fallen comrades.
Participating in a ceremony in Charlestown's Fireside restaurant were Harper Griswold (U.S. Navy), Bill Doyle (U.S. Army), Bill Tabling (U.S. Navy), Harold Rummel (U.S. Air Force), and Jack Strauch (U.S. Navy).
On June 6, 1944, a 5,000-vessel armada transporting more than 150,000 Allied troops and nearly 30,000 vehicles crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy. By nightfall on D-Day, more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were dead or wounded, but more than 100,000 had made it ashore.
The largest seaborne invasion in history, the operation began the invasion of German-occupied western Europe, led to the liberation of France from Nazi control and contributed to the Allied victory in WWII.
