Resident players take home trophy in competition against Oak Crest
Catonsville, Md. – May 31, 2019 – Charlestown, a continuing care retirement community managed by Erickson Living, hosted its first Inter-Community Cornhole Tournament against sister community Oak Crest on Thursday, May 30, 2019. The rain held off and the weather was hot and sunny for a fun and competitive day of cornhole, a bean bag toss game. The tournament was a team competition consisting of four teams from Charlestown and four teams from Oak Crest.
Each team played four rounds of cornhole. Each round had two games played to 21 points. The open field near the bocce courts was filled with cheers and excitement watching all of the skillful players toss the bean bag with ease and professionalism. Every throw was either on the board or in the hole and the enthusiastic crowd was sitting on the edge of their seats cheering for all of the teams.
At the end of the fourth round, all of the winning points were counted and Charlestown was the unanimous winner with a score of 25 wins compared to Oak Crest with 8 wins.
"Everyone's hard work practicing ahead of the tournament paid off today," said Mary Wright, Charlestown resident and Coach and Manager of the community's Cornhole Group. "Not only did we play well, but we had a lot of fun enjoying the beautiful weather and getting to know new friends from Oak Crest who share our love for this game."
During the awards ceremony, Mary was awarded the MVP Trophy for all of her hard work and dedication in making the 1st Annual Cornhole Tournament a huge success. Charlestown won the team trophy and the Charlestown Cornhole Team name will be added to the trophy.
"As the founder of the Cornhole group, Mary has been an incredible leader. We're so grateful she brought her passion for this game to our community," said Teresa Reymann-Curran, Fitness Manager at Charlestown. "Cornhole's team-oriented nature makes it a great way for residents to enjoy staying active while socializing with neighbors—it's a win-win! We're already looking forward to next year's tournament and hope to see even more communities participate."
