Retirement community welcomes first residents to new state-of-the-art continuing care building
Catonsville, Md. -- October 3, 2019 – Charlestown, a continuing care retirement community managed by Erickson Living, recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of Wilton Overlook, its brand-new, $47.5 million continuing care building.
With 192 new residences and state-of-the art amenities, Wilton Overlook will provide person-centered care for 207 Charlestown residents. In furthering Charlestown's mission as a leading provider of health care for seniors, Wilton Overlook was carefully designed to evoke a residential feel, with a strong focus on providing a range of activity spaces to encourage resident engagement and independence.
"Wilton Overlook is the environment you dream of for your loved ones. As we welcome residents, their families and staff into this stunning space, it has become so much more than a building," said David Gearing, Director of Continuing Care at Charlestown. "This community makes it come to life."
The 171,000 square foot building features skilled nursing and memory care residences designed to meet the specialized needs of residents by providing a stimulating, nurturing and amenity-rich environment. Suites feature private bedrooms and full baths and are located in close proximity to dining areas. Apartment living space, between 300 and 720 square feet, exceeds industry standards.
Common areas feature large amounts of natural light and have been thoughtfully configured to maximize the delivery of person-centered care throughout the building. Amenities including multi-purpose, activity and programming spaces, a theater, living rooms, a salon, conference rooms, a games lounge, a library and a card game room, are available for use by all continuing care residents, who can also enjoy an enclosed outdoor courtyard.
The opening of the building is a significant milestone in Charlestown's multi-phase, multi-year plan to expand and renovate its existing assisted living, memory care and nursing care residences, along with amenity spaces. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the completion of the first of three phases for the Wilton Overlook project, which will continue through 2021.
"For more than 35 years, Charlestown has been committed to meeting and exceeding the expectations of those who call Charlestown home not only today, but well into the future. Wilton Overlook certainly delivers on that promise," said Clara Parker, Executive Director at Charlestown. "We are grateful to our Board of Directors and many others for playing such key roles in making this incredible project a reality. We look forward to welcoming everyone to their new home at Wilton Overlook."
The new building will complement Charlestown's existing assisted living building, Caton Woods, which opened in November of 2016 and serves more than 100 residents.
The architect for the project was Hord Coplan Macht and the general contractor is Whiting Turner.
