Charlestown Residents Make 110 'Summer Survival Packs' for Students

May 3, 2013

CATONSVILLE, MD (MAY 3, 2013) - Charlestown retirement community residents this week took advantage of National Volunteer Week by making 110 "summer survival packs" for children participating in Riverview Elementary School's summer programs.
Nearly 300 residents hand-decorated the packs and filled them with crayons, sidewalk chalk, balls, jump ropes, play dough, old-fashioned wooden peg games, and a ball cup toss.
Charlestown purchased fabric spray paint and set up an area for residents to safely work as the packs were hung on hooks and spray-painted.
Each pack was finished off with a "Charlestown Cares" gift tag on which residents wrote notes of encouragement to students.
