March 29, 2019

Director of General Services recognized for contributions to Catonsville, Md. retirement community

Catonsville, Md. – Charlestown, a continuing care retirement community developed and managed by Erickson Living, has named Michael Fischer, Director of General Services, its Leader of the Year. Earlier this month, he was honored along with 19 other leaders, one from each of Erickson Living's communities across the country, at the company's Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Leader of the Year recognition is given to a manager or director who continually demonstrates exceptional leadership qualities and inspires, motivates and empowers his or her team members to commit to excellence in serving Charlestown residents.

As Director of General Services, Fischer oversees the management of daily facility operations, including Security and Emergency Services, Transportation Logistics, Communications and Customer Service, Housekeeping, Maintenance and Engineering, Grounds, and Construction and Property Management.

"Through Mike's leadership, the Charlestown General Services team has performed exceptionally well this past year, ranking at the top of the enterprise while consistently providing our residents with compassionate and respectful services," said Clara Parker, Executive Director. "His demonstrated leadership during times of challenge are invaluable; his steadfast, even-keeled attitude helped our community through significant incidents this year. Every day, Mike motivates and inspires people to engage in Charlestown's mission, coaching and mentoring to ensure our team is more effective as one."

Fischer joined Charlestown in December 2015 as the security and emergency services manager. He was quickly promoted to senior services manager and then general services director. Fischer retired from the Maryland State Police as a Lt. Colonel and chief of operations. He continued to serve two additional state agencies in leadership roles, retiring after 33 years of service. He earned his bachelor of science and masters of business administration from Almeda University and a post graduate certificate from Northwestern University. He is a 2016 graduate of the Erickson Living University Leadership Experience.

"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized as Leader of the Year at Charlestown," said Fischer. "Especially to be nominated by my peers, for whom I have so much respect and admiration. As a community, we had a very strong year which I believe is a direct result of the way this team works together and the deep relationships that we have. I'm incredibly grateful to be a part of that team and this community."
