Charlestown Hosts First-Ever Telethon

October 7, 2020

Virtual fundraiser brings in more than $92,000 for Benevolent Care

Catonsville, MD – October 7, 2020 – Last month, Charlestown hosted its first-ever Telethon benefitting the community's Benevolent Care Fund. The idea for the Telethon came from Charlestown's creative Philanthropy and Resident Life teams, who dreamed up this fun alternative to the Annual Gala which had to be canceled this year due to the pandemic.

Exciting and new, this "Love Boat" themed event invited Charlestown residents to set a course for adventure as Channel 972, the community's in-house television station, took them on a tour of ports-of-call around the world, exploring global cultures and cuisines right from the comfort of their apartment homes.

According to Patti Santoni, Director of Philanthropy at Charlestown, "The Telethon was AMAZING – so many positive comments from residents. Some even said that they wanted it to be longer because they enjoyed it so much that the three hours just flew by. Phones were ringing off the hook and many leaving messages that we had to call back."

Thanks to all the generous contributions from community members, the Telethon raised more than $92,000, for Charlestown's Benevolent Care Fund, even more than last year's Gala, which brought in $87,000.

"We are thrilled that the Telethon did so well, and that proud that we were able to include the entire community in this special event," Santoni continued. "And that was just in three hours. The Benevolent Care campaign continues to do well with additional funds still coming in."

In Charlestown's 37 year history, no resident has ever been asked to leave the community for financial reasons. This commitment, upheld by the Benevolent Care Fund, offers peace of mind not only to residents, but also to family members who know their loved one will always receive the care they deserve.
