CATONSVILLE, MD---When they wanted another way to serve the community, they formed the Charlestown Rotary Fellowship. When Wii sports became popular, they created a group to compete. And when a group of natives from the Empire State decided to connect, the New Yorker's Club sprung forth.
In 2012, the residents of Charlestown, the Erickson Living retirement community, celebrated a milestone with the creation of their 300th group and club. The occasion was marked on September 13th at Fruits of Our Labor, an annual showcase of resident activities.
Sherry Parrish is the Director of Resident Life at Charlestown. "We are so proud of the creativity of our residents," stated Ms. Parrish. "Since day one in 1983, they have formed, organized and led their own groups and clubs. They have created opportunities to not only socialize but also to give back to the surrounding community in hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours."
Over one hundred of these groups were represented at this year's Fruits of Our Labor, held in the Erickson Conference Center at the Catonsville-based campus. Residents provided information on upcoming events, recruited new members and learned about other interests.
Staff members from the Community Resources Department of Charlestown provide on-site support in encouraging and enabling residents to fully experience the pleasure and satisfaction that come from generating new activities.
