Peabody, MA -- This fall local students working at Brooksby Village will head to college and for some, continue on with their college/trade school education. Thanks to the over 1700 people who live at Brooksby Village, 35 students from the North Shore will receive the $5,000 Brooksby Village Student Scholarship.
"We have awarded the Brooksby Village scholarship to 359 students (including this year's students) since the program started in 2002," said Kim Whitworth, Philanthropy Manager, Brooksby Village. "The students become eligible for the Brooksby Village Scholarship by completing 1000 hours of work here over a consecutive 2-year period. We have very generous residents who want to help the students succeed in life. Over the two years of working at Brooksby Village the students and the residents build strong bonds of friendship. Residents enjoy the conversations and daily interactions with the young, energetic students and the students receive life lessons from the older generation. It is a win/win for all involved."
High school seniors will receive a total of $5,000 over the next four years of College. The money will be dispersed directly to their school in $625-per-semester increments, for a maximum of eight semesters or four years. College freshman who have worked the required 1000 hours over 2 years are also eligible. They will receive a total of $5,000 over the next three years of college. The money will be dispersed to their school in $833 per semester increments for a maximum of six semesters or three years.
"We have three named scholarships that were also awarded students this year," said Whitworth. "The Ryder Book Scholarship, created by resident Bernard Ryder as a remembrance of his wife. He awards $625 for two semesters. The Carol Dooley Scholarship goes to the child of a Brooksby Village employee. This $1,000 scholarship was created by staff in memory of former Human Resources Director, Carol Dooley. And a new $1700 scholarship was awarded this year. The Edith G Colantuono and Amelia & Henry DeAngelis Scholarship. This scholarship was created many years ago by the family of these three very giving individuals. This scholarship is open to all staff attending school full-time."
