Retirement Community Residents Help Make Going Back to School Easier

August 10, 2011

WHAT: About 20 residents who were former educators at Ashby Ponds retirement community in Ashburn, VA, shopped for, bought, and will donate school supplies to the school-aged children of the community's employees.
BACKGROUND: At Ashby Ponds, there are several retired Fairfax County Public School educators who have formed a resident group at the community and support education whenever they have the chance.  The residents include former teachers, school secretaries, school librarians, and a former Fairfax County School superintendent.  For the second year in a row, they have been working on a project to help make going back to school easier for the children of hourly employees at the retirement community.  The residents have been shopping for and buying school supplies to distribute at the community.  This year, the residents will be buying supplies for 28 children representing every grade from kindergarten through high school.
WHEN: Residents plan to distribute the school supplies on Monday, August 15, 2011 from 2:00-4:00 PM.
CONTACT:  Please contact Jessica McKay at 703-923-490 or should you wish to visit the community for the distribution event or to speak with one of the retired educators!
