Local Students to Receive $68,000 in Scholarships from Ashby Ponds

July 9, 2015

(Ashburn, Va.) - On Sunday, July 19, 17 area students will be recognized as recipients of scholarships toward higher education from Ashby Ponds retirement community.  The recipients, who work for the community's Dining Services department, will receive up to $4000 (or $500 per semester) in scholarships paid directly to the college or trade school of the student's choice.  The 2015 scholarship recipients include five local college students, 11 2015 graduates of Loudoun County high schools, and one 2015 graduate of a Fairfax County high school.  Funds for the scholarship program are donated by residents and staff at the community.

At Ashby Ponds, there are approximately 120 high school and college students from Loudoun County and Fairfax County working for the community's Dining Services department.  The students work in a variety of capacities including as servers, restaurant assistants, utility workers, and service coaches.  The students may be eligible for scholarships from the community by satisfying a number of requirements, including:

  • working at least 1000 hours during the junior/senior years of high school or senior year of high school/first year of college;
  • having no adverse disciplinary actions on record;
  • having at least a "C" average;
  • and completing all application materials.

Ashley Wood, a 2015 scholarship recipient, just completed her first year at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), but began working at Ashby Ponds as a student at Briar Woods High School. "I liked the fact that so many of my peers worked here and that the managers recognize and accommodate student's schedules and academics," said Wood.  But for Wood, the personal connection with the residents is the highlight of working at the community.  "Getting to know the Ashby Ponds residents is the best part of my job."

After she finishes her studies at NOVA, Wood plans to transfer to a university to obtain a Bachelor's degree in Nursing.  "Financially, I could not have done this without the help of so many wonderful Ashby Ponds residents who take an interest in my life and my future," said Wood.

"The 'Sponsor a Scholar' program provides the opportunity to make a more personal, one-on-one connection with a student scholar," said Debbie Cannatella, Philanthropy Manager at Ashby Ponds. "It's a great way for the resident donors and students to get to know each other better."The 2015 Ashby Ponds scholarship recipients are:
