Rose Pryor has lived at Ashby Ponds with her husband Charles approaching four years. The couple moved from Springfield, Virginia, and at one time, lived overseas in Germany and England.
Rose is a self-taught artist whose select work was displayed this spring in the gallery of the Great Oak Clubhouse. She enjoys a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylic, colored pencils, ceramics and even Zentangle.
Recently, Rose discussed a variety of topics about her artwork and life at Ashby Ponds.
Has art been a lifelong passion for you?I was born and raised in Baltimore, and my two brothers were musically and artistically inclined. My mother loved to color and literally taught me how to "stay within the lines." I remember how she blended the colors together. Her work was beautiful! We would also draw during our trips to the beach.
What about it brings you enjoyment?I never studied professionally so part of the experience for me is being creative and self-taught. It's fascinating to see something like a landscape and then bring it to life on a canvas. I've even been inspired by videos on YouTube that are great sources of ideas and technical development.
How did living abroad influence your passion for art? When Charlie and I moved to Germany, I painted some of the most beautiful scenery my eyes had ever laid sight on. When we were in England, I panted birds and the countryside. I also renewed my love of theater by working with amateur dramatics.
What is the best part of living at Ashby Ponds with so many other talented artists, musicians and entertainers?I have so many wonderful friends here who share my love for painting and drawing. We have a Drama Club with people who act and produce. It's all vibrant and inspiring! I feel a real sense of community with friends I can call upon. In our art class, we are constantly working and creating. I'm thoroughly enjoying it, and my art is really blossoming.
What are some of your favorite activities at Ashby Ponds?I enjoy being with my friends in the art studio in the Great Oak Clubhouse. I'm currently the chair of the Drama Club, and we're excited about an upcoming play entitled the "Art of Murder" that we will perform in our theater May 31-June 2. I've been able to do some singing as a member of the Song Birds, too.
