This year, November 21 is home to the Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer Society
(Ashburn, Va.) - According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. Coinciding with the Society's Great American Smokeout campaign, Ashby Ponds will introduce a tobacco-free workplace policy on November 21, with the goal to provide a healthier workplace.
"At Ashby Ponds, we are committed to encouraging behaviors that promote a healthy lifestyle for our employees," said David Gallagher, Executive Director for Ashby Ponds. "We aim to not only educate our employees about the benefits of healthy living, but also believe in providing access to amenities and services that can help staff reach health and wellness goals."
The "smoke-free" policy does include the use of all tobacco-related products and will apply to all employees, contractors, and vendors while at Ashby Ponds. In order to help employees quit or reduce their smoking, Ashby Ponds is offering cessation assistance including coverage of prescription strength cessation aids through the company's health plan, a "Beat the Pack" smoking cessation plan, and reimbursement for over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapy.
"Ashby Ponds truly cares about the health and wellbeing of our employees," said Nicole Johnson, Director of Human Resources for Ashby Ponds. "We are committed to creating a healthier environment and promoting a healthier lifestyle for the employees of our community."
This year, Ashby Ponds was named one of the Healthiest Employers in the Greater Washington area by the Washington Business Journal and received a Loudoun County Healthy Business Award (Gold). One of the fundamental health and wellness options available to staff at Ashby Ponds includes access to an on-site Employee Health and Wellness Center. The Employee Health and Wellness Center allows employees to make same-day appointments, which reduces employee absences and time away from work for medical care. Ashby Ponds also offers discounted memberships to staff to the on-site fitness center and other local gyms. Additionally, employees have the ability to access an online program called My Nutrition that provides detailed nutritional information for meal items served daily at the community. The "smoke-free" policy adds another layer to keeping the workplace at Ashby Ponds safe and healthy.
"We have a responsibility to create a healthy environment for employees and visitors that is free from smoking-related risks," said Johnson. "We are going to provide tremendous support for our coworkers who plan to end their tobacco use."
