Student Scholars on Parade

September 8, 2020

Every year since 2004, Ann's Choice residents have held a ceremony to honor the students who work at the Erickson Living-managed senior community in Bucks County, Penn. The students receive resident funded college scholarships and well-deserved recognition for their service.

Said one former student employee, "It's like having hundreds of grandparents cheering you on. It's really a special day." 2020 presented unique challenges, given the stay home orders and social distancing required by COVID-19. Determined to find a creative and safe alternative, residents quickly landed on an outdoor parade. On June 19, 25 high school seniors walked through the campus in their caps and gowns, as residents and staff cheered from sidewalks, patios, and balconies.

"We wanted to celebrate our students with something special, since many ceremonies were canceled due to COVID-19," said Ann's Choice Manager of Philanthropy Sharon Silvestri. "We thank our residents for supporting the Student Scholarship Fund year after year. Their generous contributions help make college more affordable for these deserving students."

Each student received an $8,000 scholarship. Additionally, eight students received $36,500 in scholarships created by individual residents and groups. These included the Ralph E. Cohen Memorial Scholarship, the Thomas Holcombe Memorial Scholarship, the Cheryl Beth Silverman Memorial Scholarship, the Ann's Choice Jewish Residents' Council Scholarship, and the Ann's Choice Lifelong Learning Academy Scholarship.

To qualify, students must work at Ann's Choice for at least 1,000 hours during their junior and senior years of high school, maintain satisfactory grades, and build positive relationships with residents.

Since inception, the Ann's Choice Student Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $3 million in financial aid to student employees.

Says resident and contributor Harry Beam, "These kids work so hard and bring so much to the residents. We feel honored to help support their education."
